Food for Us: Hands – On Food Exploration for Grades 2 – 3

BC Dairy’s Food for Us is a free, eight-lesson program developed by registered dietitians to help  educators teach Grade 2 and 3 students about a wide variety of foods and where their food comes from.  The program features fun, easy-to-use lesson plans that promote hands-on, experiential learning while aligning with BC Curriculum Standards and Canada’s Food Guide.

Built on the principles of the Ellyn Satter Eating Competence Model, Food for Us incorporates the Satter  Division of Responsibility in Feeding and encourages the use of non-evaluative, inclusive language when  discussing food. By focusing on food exposure without pressure, the program supports students in  exploring food at their own pace, within a respectful and supportive environment.

“As I progress through the Food for Us lessons, I notice that my students are more open to trying new  foods. Once they know that they won’t be expected to finish what is on their plates they are more likely to  take a piece to just give it a try.”  – C.Y.

Before delivering the program, educators participate in a professional development workshop led by a  BC Dairy registered dietitian. This session introduces Ellyn Satter’s approach to eating and feeding and its application in  classroom food and nutrition education. Teachers also learn strategies to support healthy food  environments more broadly, including during classroom celebrations, snack breaks, and lunch times.

The ESI Seal of Approval highlights the program’s commitment to helping children develop trust,  autonomy, and enjoyment around eating—laying the foundation for lifelong positive relationships with  food.

Passport to Healthy Living: Helping Students Explore Wellness Their Way

BC Dairy’s Passport to Healthy Living is a free, nine-lesson program developed by registered dietitians to  support food literacy, physical literacy, planning, and teamwork for students from Grades 4 to 7. Through  interactive lessons, students explore what balanced, healthy living can look like— emphasizing that  health and well-being is personal and unique to everyone.

The program includes opportunities for food tasting, movement, and hands-on projects linking to the BC curriculum and Canada’s Food Guide. Grounded in the Ellyn Satter Eating Competence Model, Passport to Healthy Living supports students in developing a positive relationship with food, using the Satter  Division of Responsibility in Feeding to promote trust and autonomy.

“The division of responsibility and no pressure environments are a new concept for me but I have noticed  how important this attitude is when it comes to discussing food and tasting with my students. The kids  feel less pressure with the tasting and don’t have to try anything if they aren’t ready, it takes so much  pressure off both me as the teacher and the student!”  – J.P.
